Alpona, also known as Alpana, is a traditional art form that originated in Bengal. It is a form of decoration using intricate and colorful patterns drawn on the floor or walls. Among all the festivals, Durga Puja, which is the biggest festival of the Bengali community, holds a significant place for Alpona designs. People of all ages come together to create unique designs using rice flour, flower petals, and natural colours. The art of creating Alpona designs is passed down through generations, and each family has its unique style of creating Alponas.
The beauty of Alpona lies in the intricacy and symmetry of the designs. The designs are created using geometric shapes, lines, curves, and floral patterns. The designs are often symmetrical and are drawn using a steady hand. Traditionally, Alpona designs are created using rice flour, but nowadays, people use natural colours and flowers to add more colour to the designs. The colours used in Alpona designs have symbolic meanings. For instance, red represents happiness and prosperity, yellow represents purity and peace, and green represents fertility and growth.
