Kalamkari is a traditional style of hand-painted or block-printed fabric that originated in India. The word “Kalamkari” literally means “pen work” in Sanskrit and refers to the intricate designs that are created using a pen or a bamboo stick dipped in natural dyes.
Kalamkari sarees are traditional Indian sarees that are adorned with intricate Kalamkari designs. These sarees are usually made of cotton or silk and feature a variety of intricate patterns, including floral designs, mythological scenes, and geometric shapes. The designs are created using a range of techniques, including hand-painting and block printing, and are often enhanced with intricate embroidery and embellishments.
Kalamkari sarees are popular for their unique and timeless beauty, and are often worn for special occasions, such as weddings and religious festivals. They are also popular for their versatility, as they can be styled in a range of ways to suit different tastes and occasions.
In recent years, Kalamkari sarees have experienced a resurgence in popularity, with designers and fashion houses incorporating the traditional designs into their collections. However, despite their modern appeal, Kalamkari sarees remain true to their roots, as they are still produced using traditional techniques and natural dyes.
Designer Ayush Kejriwal recently launched his new hand painted Kalamkari sarees collections and named his collection ” Umanga”. He has been working on his Umanga collections for over 5 months.
The actual drawing has been inspired by Polish folk art. He has used a Benars Tussar silk base in a gold beigeish shade and the motifs have been painted in shades of indigo, meroon, and a touch of black colour.
Overall, Kalamkari sarees are a beautiful and unique addition to any wardrobe and are a timeless symbol of India’s rich cultural heritage. Whether you’re looking for a traditional saree for a special occasion, or a stylish and versatile piece to wear every day, a Kalamkari saree is a perfect choice.
